AMSEA Staff
Jerry Dzugan Jerry develops marine and boating safety curricula, manages grants, advocates for marine and boating safety, trains commercial fishermen, and is involved with marine safety instructor training. He oversees the commercial fishing safety program. Jerry has worked in the commercial fishing industry and lived on a small island for many years. He also messes around in many types of small boats.
Debi Roesch
Debi generally keeps the office running smoothly. She also makes sure that AMSEA's courses are well-promoted in the communities where they occur. Off hours she enjoys spending time with her two young grandchildren, and loves reading, sewing and traveling. Originally hailing from South Africa, she spent 5 years in Northern California before moving to Sitka in 1997.
Amy handles finance-related tasks, data management and various other administrative tasks. When Amy spends time on the water it is in her skiff or kayak. She enjoys her family, gardening, and hiking on and off the trails around Sitka with her husband, friends and usually a dog or two.
Kristie uses her graphic design skills to create many of AMSEA's publications. She also coordinates AMSEA's participation in trade shows and other events, and keeps AMSEA's web site current and looking good. After living in Sitka for 23 years, she now works for AMSEA from her home in Sandpoint, Idaho where she also enjoys boating, bicycling, handweaving and gardening. Any technical problems with this web site should be brought to her attention by e-mail.
Steven, working from his home in Kodiak, Alaska, coordinates AMSEA's emergency drills courses and whatever other courses are needed on Kodiak Island and throughout Western Alaska. He also teaches many of these courses. A retired public school teacher, lifelong boater, and member of the USCG Auxiliary, Steven commercially trolls for salmon and tourists for his charter business during his summers away from AMSEA.
Rick Petersen When Rick isn't on the road teaching commercial fisherman, marine safety instructors or school children, he's in the Sitka office organizing new courses. During slow seasons, he pursues funding and looks for communities with marine safety needs. He also assists with gear. Rick has fished commercially, owned a sailboat and skiffs, but finds his marine passion in kayaking. He is a board member of the Greater Sitka Arts Council, and he raises a son and a daughter in Sitka.
Mary responds to instructor requests for equipment and teaching resources, and maintains AMSEA's lending collection of water safety gear. Mary has more boats than anybody else at AMSEA, uses them to commute back and forth from her island house, and plays on the water whenever she can.
Jaquette Carroll Jaquette is AMSEA's first AmeriCorps member. After completing the Marine Safety Instructor Training in 2005, she developed an outdoor safety class for Sitkans with disabilities. She now leads and assists with safety training, helps maintain and update AMSEA's inventory of safety equipment and supplies, and helps coordinate training throughout Alaska.
Mike Morris Mike is on staff part-time primarily to provide AMSEA training to young people in Southeast Alaska. Mike is a retired public school teacher, an avid outdoor enthusiast, a member of the USCG Auxilary, and a Boy Scout leader.
