Information About This Course

Marine Safety Instructor Training (MSIT) course is a premier train-the-trainer course. It is an intensive 48-hour, six and one-half day program designed to train individuals to effectively teach cold water survival procedures, marine safety equipment and onboard safety drills. The course is U.S. Coast Guard approved. Instructors successfully completing the course receive:

  • Sea time toward licensure or credits toward EMT certification
  • A fishing vessel drill instructor card (meets U.S. Coast Gurard requirements for documented fishing vessels)
  • Three college credits (500 level) from the University of Alaska Southeast (for an additional fee)
  • Credit for completing "special professional training or experience that relates directly to the contingencies listed in 46 CFR 28.270 (a) including experience as an instructor, or training received in instructional methods."
  • Opportunity to become a U.S. Coast Guard-accepted marine safety instructor with access to AMSEA's extensive equipment and teaching materials lending collection.
  • STCW "Train the Trainer" Certificate - (for an additional fee and an additional half-day)

Course Costs

AMSEA Members* $495.00
Non-members $550.00

*Member rates are available to individuals who hold a current AMSEA membership at at least the $50.00 (Donor) level. To learn more about AMSEA memberships, please visit the Membership Page.

Fee waivers available on a limited basis. Optional STCW "Train the Trainer" certificate can be completed the afternoon of the last day of the MSIT course. Additional fee of $200.00 applies.

Those wishing to take this course for university credit, can earn up to 3 postgraduate level credits for an additional fee of $90. There are additional course requirements for credit. Registration forms will be available the first day of class and the $90. fee will be collected at that time.

Additional costs include travel to and from Seward, and housing and meals during the six and one-half day course.

A limited number of course participant stipends for travel costs are available for individuals in a position to provide safety training to commercial fishermen thanks to funding from National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health and other sources. Depending upon current funding and applicant need, part or all of travel expenses (maximum of $500.00) may be reimbursed. Please see the travel cost reimbursment application for details about eligibilty for these stipends.

 

Course Location and Schedule

AMSEA has worked with Alaska Vocational Technical Center (AVTEC) to provide this course in Seward every year since 1987. AVTEC has operated for over 25 years as a quality vocational training school with programs in Marine Technology, Commercial Baking, EMS, Welding, Heavy Equipment, Forestry, Automotive Technology and many other programs. AMSEA's MSIT course is offered through their Maritime Training Center.

The course begins promptly at 8:00 AM on Tuesday March 23, 2010 at AVTEC’s classroom facility at 809 2nd Avenue in Seward.  Class will conclude on Monday March 29 before noon in time to return to Anchorage.
