Information About This Course
Marine Safety Instructor Training (MSIT) course is a premier train-the-trainer course. It is an intensive 48-hour, six and one-half day program designed to train individuals to effectively teach cold water survival procedures, marine safety equipment and onboard safety drills. The course is U.S. Coast Guard approved. Instructors successfully completing the course receive:
- Sea time toward licensure or credits toward EMT certification
- A fishing vessel drill instructor card (meets U.S. Coast Gurard requirements for documented fishing vessels)
- College credit (500 level) University of Alaska Southeast (for an additional fee)
- Credit for completing "special professional training or experience that relates directly to the contingencies listed in 46 CFR 28.270 (a) including experience as an instructor, or training received in instructional methods."
- Opportunity to become a U.S. Coast Guard-accepted marine safety instructor with access to AMSEA's extensive equipment and teaching materials lending collection.
- STCW "Train the Trainer" Certificate - (for an additional fee and an additional half-day)

Course Costs
AMSEA Members* $495.00
Non-members $550.00
A late registration fee of $100.00 will be charged for anyone registering after 5:00 PM on Friday September 5, 2008.

Optional STCW Train-the-Trainer certificate coursework can be completed the afternoon of the last day of the MSIT course. Additional fee of $200.00 applies.
Those wishing to take this course for university credit, may earn up to 3 postgraduate level credits for an additional fee of $75. There are additional course requirements for credit. Registration forms will be available the first day of class and the $75. fee will be collected at that time.
Additional costs include travel to and from Sitka, and housing and meals during the six and one-half day course.
A limited number of course participant stipends for travel costs are available for individuals in a position to provide safety training to commercial fishermen thanks to funding from National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health and other sources. Depending upon current funding and applicant need, part or all of travel expenses (maximum of $500.00) may be reimbursed. Please see the travel cost reimbursment application for details about eligibilty for these stipends.
Course Location and Schedule
The course begins promptly at 8:00 AM on Tuesday September 23, 2008 at State of Alaska’s Public Safety Training Academy (also known as the Trooper Academy) in Sitka. Class will conclude on Monday Septmber 29 before noon and in time to depart Sitka by air on that day.
