With a bit of help from Cynthia Wallesz, at United Southeast Alaska Gillnetters, we have condensed Tomi's advice into a one-page tip-sheet that you can share with your crew. Close Encounters of the Worst Kind

Editor's Note: This article was originally published in the Spring 2016 edition of AMSEA's newsletter, Marine Safety Updates. With the start of "cruise ship season" in just a couple of weeks, this seems like a good time to revisit this topic. The author, Tomi Marsh, is a member of the Southeast Alaska Pilots' Association, as well as an experienced commercial fisher and fishing tender operator. It’s spring in South Coastal Alaska - Or rather it seems like its been spring all winter. The salmon berries have been flowering since March and the Rhododendrons have been in full bloom. No one can remember the last snow fall and the herring came early this year for spawning, turning the waters white

Free F/V Drill Conductor Workshop in Anchorage

AMSEA will be conducting a Fishing Vessel Drill Conductor Workshop in Anchorage on May 6 & 7. Like all of our F/V Drill Conductor workshops, the two-day course meets the U.S. Coast Guard training requirements for drill conductors on commercial fishing vessels...and it's free to commercial fishermen! That's all thanks to support form the Coast Guard, the Alaska Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development (DCCED), and the National Institute of Occupational Safety & Health (NIOSH). Now, with more fishermen living in Anchorage than in any other Alaska municipality, you would think that filling a workshop there is a slam dunk. Not so. As with any larger city, there's so much going
