2018: Become a Marine Safety Instructor!

People become an AMSEA Marine Safety Instructor for different reasons. Some teach marine safety for their employer. Others offer marine safety training as a business venture. But, whatever their reason, AMSEA instructors share a passion for helping to save lives at sea. They recognize that the right training and equipment can make the difference between a mishap and a tragedy. They want to share their knowledge and attitude of safety and risk management with other mariners to help them come home safely from every voyage.

What about you? Do you keep your safety gear maintained and up-to-date? Do you ensure that your crew know their roles in an emergency and practice it? Do you share that desire to help others and share your knowledge? If so, enroll in one of our upcoming Marine Safety Instructor Training (MSIT) courses. Make 2018 the year that you become an AMSEA-trained, U.S. Coast Guard-accepted Marine Safety Instructor.

Currently, we have two MSIT workshops scheduled for 2018. February 6 to 10, we have a MSIT workshop scheduled in Seattle, Washington and a second MSIT scheduled April 24 to April 29 in Seward, Alaska. The cost for either workshop is $995 and there may be scholarships available for qualifying commercial fishermen. You can register for either workshop at the link below or call (907) 747-3287.

Both workshops will cover:

  • Methods of Marine Safety Instruction

  • Emergency Procedures

  • Risk Assessment

  • How to Conduct Effective Drills

  • Navigation Regulations

  • Cold-Water Survival Skills

  • Man-Overboard Recovery

  • Firefighting

  • Dewatering Pumps

  • Life Rafts

  • Abandon-Ship Procedures

  • Helicopter-Rescue

  • Signal Flares, MAYDAY Calls, and Other Emergency Signals

  • Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs)

  • Flooding and Damage Control

  • Conducting Safety Orientations

  • Cross-Cultural Communication

Taught by experienced mariners, the MSIT is an intensive, train-the-trainer program. We recommend it for anyone who wants to provide Emergency Drill Conductor training for commercial fishermen or who wants to train others in cold-water safety skills and to respond quickly and effectively to an emergency at sea. The MSIT prepares participants to become U.S. Coast Guard-accepted Marine Safety Instructors, pending approval from the Coast Guard. You can make a difference by helping commercial fishermen and other mariners get needed marine safety training. Enroll in an AMSEA MSIT workshop and join our network of Marine Safety Instructors!
