AMSEA is offering a FREE Fishing Vessel Drill Conductor course and Sea Grant is offering a  Fishermen’s First Aid and Safety Training (FFAST) course in San Diego, California for commercial fishermen, made possible by support from NIOSH, the U.S. Coast Guard, California Sea Grant, and AMSEA members.


 The FFAST portion combines an HSI Basic First Aid/CPR/AED certification (USCG Approved) with additional fishing-specific, boat-based scenarios and skills. Lunch and snacks will be provided, and the course will cover essential safety topics to improve on-the-water preparedness and response.

  • Liferafts & Abandon Ship

  • Cold-Water Survival Skills

  • EPIRBs, Signal Flares &

  • MAYDAY Calls

  • Man Overboard Recovery

  • Firefighting

  • Flooding & Damage Control

  • Immersion Suits/Lifejackets

  • Helicopter Rescue

  • Emergency Drills

  • In-Water & On Vessel Drills

FFAST Topics Include:

  • HSI Basic First Aid/CPR/AED–USCG Approved

  • Orthopedic Injuries

  • Head and Spinal Injuries

  • Patient Packaging and Carries


The Drill Conductor portion of this course meets the US Coast Guard training requirements for drill conductors on commercial fishing vessels, 46 CFR 28.270(c).
